Materials
What is a vegan wallet?
A vegan wallet is made entirely without animal-derived materials — no animal leather, suede or animal-based glues. At Oliver Co, ours go a step further: they're made from premium bio-based leathers derived largely from agricultural waste, rather than cheap petroleum-based plastics.
What is apple leather?
Apple leather is a bio-based material made using upcycled apple waste left over from the fruit-juice industry, much of it from Bolzano in Italy. The dried apple waste is ground to a powder, combined with a polymer and applied to a tear-resistant cotton/polyester canvas — roughly half apple waste, half polymer. It has a smooth, premium feel, is OEKO-TEX certified (free from harmful substances), and turns a food byproduct into a durable, leather-like material. It isn't fully plastic-free, but its impact is far lower than animal leather or virgin plastic.
What is WASTEA®?
WASTEA® is a bio-based leather made from upcycled tea waste, co-developed exclusively for Oliver Co. The dried tea waste is milled to a powder, combined with a low-impact bio-PU, and coated onto a recycled polyester canvas — a supple, hard-wearing material with 65% bio-content. It's OEKO-TEX certified and coloured without DMF, with a GRS-certified recycled backing. It's one of the few wallet materials you won't find anywhere else.
What makes WASTEA® a sustainable material?
WASTEA® starts with the tea industry's most problematic by-product — 'class 4' tea waste, which is high in caffeine and tannic acid, won't burn easily and can't be used as animal feed, so it would otherwise be buried or destroyed. Tea leather puts that waste to use and creates extra income for tea farmers. Because tea leaves are already dried during normal tea production, it also avoids the separate, energy-intensive drying stage that many fruit-based leathers require. It's made in Turkey from Turkish tea, close to where our wallets are crafted, and WASTEA's bio-based materials have undergone independent life-cycle analysis.
Are apple leather and WASTEA® plastic-free?
Neither is fully plastic-free, and we'd rather be upfront about that. Apple leather upcycles real apple waste but is roughly half polymer, which gives it strength and a leather-like finish; WASTEA® likewise pairs upcycled tea leaves with a bio-PU binder. Both dramatically reduce impact compared with animal leather or virgin plastic. For a fully plastic-free material, look for something like MIRUM®, which is made entirely from natural inputs.
What's the most sustainable wallet material?
There's no single winner — it depends on what you weigh most heavily. For the lowest end-of-life impact, a fully plastic-free material such as MIRUM® leads. For the best waste-reduction story, upcycled materials like apple leather and WASTEA® turn an existing byproduct into something useful. What unites the best choices is transparency: a brand that tells you exactly what its material is and where it comes from.
Durability & care
Are vegan wallets durable?
Yes. Modern bio-based leathers are engineered for everyday wear, and a well-made wallet will last for years. Durability comes down to construction more than the material name — sealed and painted edges, a reinforced spine, quality stitching and a hard-wearing lining are what keep a wallet looking good. Each Oliver Co wallet is finished with at least three layers of hand-painted edge coat, the point that takes the most wear, and carries a two-year warranty.
How durable are bio-based leathers?
Today's bio-based leathers are engineered for everyday wear, and a well-made one will last for years. As an example, the apple leather we use has been independently tested at a tensile strength of 500–700 N per 5cm (ISO 1421:2000) — well above the 200 N minimum set for car interiors — and at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale abrasion test, far beyond the 10,000–15,000 typically specified for domestic use. Our WASTEA®, a bio-PU made from upcycled tea leaves, is likewise built for daily carry. Other materials on the market — cork, cactus (Desserto) and Piñatex among them — vary in feel and finish, but quality versions all hold up well. As with any material, construction matters as much as the leather itself: sealed edges, a reinforced spine and a good lining are what determine how long a wallet really lasts.
Do vegan wallets last as long as animal leather ones?
A high-quality bio-based leather wallet is comparable to a good animal-leather wallet in lifespan. Construction and care make more difference than the material category alone — a well-built vegan wallet will outlast a poorly made leather one.
Is vegan leather waterproof?
Most bio-based leathers, including apple leather, are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. Wipe spills promptly and let the material air-dry naturally if it gets wet, rather than using direct heat.
How do I care for my wallet?
Wipe clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaners. Don't overfill the pockets — one card per slot helps the material keep its shape. Store away from direct sunlight and prolonged heat, which can fade or warp any material over time.
